Visitor Guide

The heart of the symposium will beat in Kütahya’s historic center.

The opening program is planned at the 2nd Yakub Bey Complex, while the parallel sessions are organized around the Tile Museum and Vacidiye Madrasa. Since both venues are located around the Grand Mosque within the historic urban fabric that carries Germiyan memory, the program becomes not only an academic gathering but also a cultural route experienced on site.

Travel Plan

Getting to Kütahya from Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir

The most practical way to reach Kütahya depends on the point of departure: direct flights and road travel stand out from Istanbul, rail via Eskişehir or road travel from Ankara, and road or TCDD connections from Izmir. The notes below are intended for preliminary visitor planning.

From Istanbul

The fastest option, when flights are available, is the Istanbul Airport - Zafer Airport route. Alternatively, Istanbul - Eskişehir by high-speed train followed by a train or road connection to Kütahya may be considered.

  • Air: Istanbul Airport - Zafer Airport flights should be checked according to the current period.
  • Train: Istanbul - Eskişehir high-speed train, then regional train or private transfer from Eskişehir to Kütahya.
  • Road: the Istanbul - Bursa - Bozüyük - Kütahya route should be planned as roughly a half-day journey.

From Ankara

For Ankara, a strong option is rail via Eskişehir. Road travel through Eskişehir also offers a straightforward route to Kütahya.

  • Train: Ankara - Eskişehir high-speed train, then Eskişehir - Kütahya regional rail connection.
  • Road: the Ankara - Eskişehir - Kütahya route should be planned comfortably with breaks.
  • Bus: intercity services from Ankara AŞTİ to Kütahya Bus Terminal may be checked.

From Izmir

Road travel from Izmir is usually planned via Manisa - Uşak - Kütahya. For rail travel, current TCDD Izmir/Kütahya connections should be checked.

  • Road: the Izmir - Manisa - Uşak - Kütahya line is a direct and clear route.
  • Train: long-distance and transfer options departing from Izmir Basmane should be checked through TCDD.
  • Bus: direct services from Izmir Bus Terminal to Kütahya Bus Terminal are a practical alternative.

From the Airport to Kütahya Center

Zafer Airport is located in Kütahya’s Altıntaş district and serves the Kütahya, Afyonkarahisar, and Uşak corridor as a regional airport. The airport’s official page states that there is a shuttle between Kütahya center and Zafer Airport for all flights. Since shuttle and flight times may change, the flight information and shuttle pages should be checked before booking.

Shuttle
Kütahya center - Zafer Airport shuttles operate according to flight times.
Taxi
Taxi or private transfer options may be considered at the terminal exit.
Car Rental
Car rental is convenient if nearby routes such as Aizanoi and the Kütahya region are planned.

By High-Speed Rail and Train

There is no direct high-speed rail line to Kütahya; the most functional connection is via Eskişehir. Travelers from Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya can reach Eskişehir by high-speed train, then continue to Kütahya by regional train or road transfer. The Eskişehir - Kütahya line is about 77 km and takes roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes; exact times and tickets should be checked via TCDD Taşımacılık.

High-Speed Rail Transfer Point
Eskişehir Station
Kütahya Arrival
Kütahya Station is located close to the city center.
Planning Note
Enough transfer time should be allowed between the high-speed train and the regional train.

Symposium Venues

Two historic venues, one central route

The opening and parallel sessions are planned around two nearby historic buildings in Kütahya’s historic center. This proximity makes transitions easy while making the symposium’s relationship with the Germiyan legacy visible through the venues themselves.

Opening day and main session venue

2nd Yakub Bey Complex (Tile Museum)

Paşam Sultan Neighborhood, next to the Grand Mosque / Kütahya Center

Built in 1411 by Germiyan ruler Yakub Çelebi II, the complex’s imaret and tomb section opened as the Tile Museum in 1999. As Türkiye’s first and only tile museum, it brings Kütahya and İznik tiles together in a historic Germiyan setting.

  • It is located around the Grand Mosque; walking access within the historic center is convenient.
  • Search “Kütahya Tile Museum” or “2nd Yakub Bey Complex” in navigation apps.
  • Parking and pedestrian density nearby should be considered on the opening day.

Parallel session venue

Vacidiye Madrasa (Kütahya Archaeology Museum)

Börekçiler Neighborhood, adjacent to the Grand Mosque / Kütahya Center

Known as the Umur bin Savcı Madrasa, the building was commissioned in 1314 by Umur bin Savcı of the Germiyanids and is also known as Vacidiye Madrasa. With its stone portal reflecting Seljuk art and its enclosed madrasa layout, it is a strong marker of scholarly life in the Germiyan period.

  • Because it is adjacent to the Grand Mosque, it lies within the same historic core as the Tile Museum.
  • Search “Kütahya Archaeology Museum” or “Vacidiye Madrasa” in navigation apps.
  • For parallel session changes, allowing walking time between the two venues is sufficient.

Local Notes

Small preparations for symposium days in Kütahya

  • The symposium venues in central Kütahya are within a historic pedestrian fabric; comfortable shoes are a good idea.
  • In June, the difference between daytime and evening temperatures may be noticeable; a light jacket or cardigan may be useful for outdoor transitions.
  • The Tile Museum, Grand Mosque, Vacidiye Madrasa, and Germiyan Street can be planned within the same visit rhythm.
  • Since flight, train, and shuttle schedules may vary, timing recommendations on this page will be clarified again when the final program is announced.
